One Strivers Row is located in the historic Strivers Row neighborhood of upper Manhattan. Almat acquired the corner site, an existing early 1900’s, five story building and the adjacent one story garage used to maintain trucks. In lieu of clearing the site of all its existing structures and constructing a new building, the decision was made to preserve the early 20th century building to keep the contextual character of the neighborhood and build a modern addition. We were able to restore the façade and refabricate the damaged cornices. The interior of the building was entirely gutted to achieve the same floor to ceiling heights of the new slate grey paneled façade of the addition. In so doing, we were able to gain an additional penthouse floor in the building and achieve floors to ceiling heights from 9’-6” to 12’-0”.
The resulting design and preservation, created fourteen unique and airy apartments ranging from one bedroom units to two bedroom duplexes and large three bedroom units. The site was fully excavated to create recreational spaces on the cellar level that accessed private garden for the two lower duplexes. We were also able to create penthouse unit with stunning 360 degree views and two terraces. Due its prime location along Frederick Douglass Blvd, two commercial condominiums were designed.
